A quick update on the project… I carved a butterfly onto the body. I probably shouldn’t be so concerned with aesthetics on cbg #1 but as an artist I can help it! I also used a program to make a template for the fret scales. It’s called WFRET. Find it here: europa.spaceports.com

Home made Cigar Box Amp – sound test
This is the first amp I’ve ever made and I couldn’t have done it without the leaflet “How To Build A Cigar Box Amp” from Smojo. (If you want one Smojo can be contacted at smojoguitars@yahoo.co.uk) I used a Montecristo cigar box, a Kemo MO32 12 watt amp module and a 4″ 4ohm car speaker. It’s powered with a 9v battery (didn’t want to do anything linked up to the mains while I’m still SO inexperienced!!) Cigar Box Guitar “Statesboro Blues” 4 string fretless slide by Mark Stowe
Here is a simple arrangement of the blues classic “Statesboro Blues”. I’ve got the 4 string fretless cigar box guitar tuned to open G (GBdg) which makes it easy to play the song on a single instrument and still manage to add some Duane Allman style slide. While the song is played in the key of D, Duane Allman had his guitar tuned to open E and played the song around the tenth fret. To match what he did I like using the open G tuning GBdg and centering my playing around where the 7th fret would be (if I had frets). While this open G tuning may not be as popular as other open G tunings (namely the DGbd open G tuning), I think you’ll find it great for call and answer blues riffs. Overdriven piezo pickup on a 3 string cigar box guitar ~ jjb-electronics.com
I am always surprised when I get emails from people saying that piezos and internal guitar pickups sound tinny or feedback when they put them on cigar box guitars, I try to tell them that when they use a door buzzer piezo or converted ringers from radio shack, that it will of coarse sound harsh (by the way, it is still cool to use door buzzers and homemade pickups, its totally fun to be creative and resourceful) but if you are expecting more, just spend 20 bucks or so for a real guitar pickup that is made for cigar box guitars and acoustic guitars. Lastly, I often hear how it is not possible to overdrive them to get a humbucker sound, once again that is a myth, the most important part is the pickup used and the construction of the guitar….setting up the sound correctly might help too! I plugged this simple jjb-electronics PPS-100 pickup into a 90′s distortion (Killzone 5) pedal and drove it strait into my wall amp and turned up the gain to max, then tuned down the volume till most of the hum went away that the cheap distorion pedal makes… and …..there you have it….an almost ‘humbucker-ish” sound, no feedback, no tinny sound, just full on electrified balls in your pants sizzlin’ like grandma’s bacon…..anyone can do it if you use a pickup from jjb electronics, you can make your cigar box guitar sound great and it will offer a more enjoyable time when you play it…..just shoot on over to jjb-electronics.com, ask for Jessie and get the basic pickup, or spring for …
